Encinitas is Seeking Sand for Its Beaches

Friday, August 21st, 2009

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports today that Encinitas is looking for sources of sand to use to replenish its beaches after erosion. The city has obtained a permit from the Coastal Commission that allows a streamlined avenue for the city to obtain and approve sand without lengthy delays. Much of the sand comes from excavation at new construction projects, but there are few such projects available as sources because of the recession.

When sand is found it would be transported to the beaches at no cost to the contractor. Sand is only placed between October and March to protect wildlife. The sand is examined and only used if it meets quality and purity standards.

Encinitas will pay for the cost from a regional fund. Nearby cities, such as Carlsbad, Solana Beach, and Oceanside are also looking for sand for replenishment.

New CEO for Encinitas Chamber of Commerce Wants to Re-Establish Integrity

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

The North County Times reports on Thurs., Aug. 6th that Marshall Weinreb has been named new CEO of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce which has its headquarters at 859 Second St. in Encinitas.

Over the past few years, the Chamber has suffered from divisiveness and a lack of accountability. Weinreb pledges to restore that accountability and integrity. The Chamber receives between $80,000 – $90,000 each year to operate its Visitor Center.

Recently, the Chamber has been in much turmoil. The former CEO left in February, citing differences with the board of directors. One of the former members of the board of directors has launched a competing group called the New Encinitas Chamber of Commerce. Weinreb calls this strategy a use of divisive tactics.

Weinreb said that his priorities include creating more networking opportunities for members and to make successes out of Chamber-sponsored events such as Oktoberfest on October 20th.

Weinreb has met with Encinitas mayor, Maggie Houlihan, and Houlihan says she welcomes his spirit of cooperation. Together, they are planning a free medical lecture series on common cancers at the Encinitas Community Library.

Weinreb is applying basic principles and management practices to the running of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce and hopes to restore faith from the community and from its members. Please visit the Encinitas Chamber on 2nd Street and learn more about living  in this community.

New Children’s Garden at Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

This summer, Quail Botanical Garden in Encinitas unveiled its brand new Hamilton Children’s Garden. It’s a one-acre play space that allows kids to experience nature in fun and creative ways.

The big attraction is the tree house where kids can climb and see the Garden from above. Besides the tree house, the Children’s Garden is divided into themed sections including art, music, and the senses.

The tree house is more than 20 feet high. It’s a mixture of plants and manmade materials, and kids can crawl around in the roots or go to the top. The top of the tree house offers a view of the entire children’s garden, which is one of the largest on the West Coast. To get the best view, kids can climb a rope ladder up to the crow’s nest.

For other fun, kids can kick off their shoes and walk in a stream, play a game of giant tic tac toe, use their shadow to tell time in the Sundial Garden, or make music in the Garden Rhythms section on gourds, bamboo chimes, or a rock xylophone.

Come visit the Children’s Garden and find out one more reason why as a home buyer, you should consider Encinitas.

Subdividing mobile-home park – Encinitas

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

On July 15, the Encinitas City Council voted to allow the owner of a mobile home park on 101, The Sands, to convert the rental lots to individual ownership. The Sands will now offer buyers the ability to buy a mobile home west of 101 within walking distance to the beaches and own the land too.

The final parcel map for the Sands mobile home park conversion was approved by the Planning Commission on May 7th, and now the state’s Department of Real Estate will have the final approval of the standards for the mobile home park conversion as early as August.

The Sands will convert the park’s 56 individual spaces of land at 1624 N. Coast Highway 101 into resident-owned plots. Lots at the park range in size from 700 – 750 sq. ft. The Sands Residence Association represents approximately 40 residents at the park and was formed in an effort to negotiate with the park owner.

Barring any problems with the final approval, the opportunity to own both a mobile home and a lot at the Sands should be available soon.

Cardiff Cares – Monthly Community Cleanup

Cardiff Cares – Monthly Community Cleanup of Carpentier Parkway

Beautifying Carpentier Parkway has been a longtime project of the Cardiff Botanical Society, a committee of the Cardiff 101 Chamber of Commerce that leases the land from the North County Transit District.

The park, a patch of colorful wildflowers and native plants, is sandwiched between San Elijo Avenue and the railroad tracks and stretches from Birmingham to Chesterfield drives; providing a popular pathway for area residents who bike, jog or walk dogs along the high-traffic route.

In addition to reflecting the uniqueness and independence of the beach town, the spruced-up parkway adds to the aesthetics and appeal of surrounding businesses.  Businesses that look out on this now have a beautiful ocean view.

Volunteers pitch in the last Saturday of each month to help keep the parkway from becoming debris-laden and overgrown by weeds.   The success of the project depends on plant and monetary donations from the community, as well as the manpower of interested and caring community members.  Volunteers are the lifeblood of the park and always welcome!

To get involved, just show up at one of the monthly community cleanup days on the last Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon.

Don’t have the time or physical abilities to help?  No problem!  Call (760) 436-0431 and find out what you can do to help.
