Proposed Carlsbad Shopping Center Encounters Much Opposition

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

On Tuesday night, Aug. 11th, 150 Carlsbad residents crowded into the Carlsbad City Council meeting and expressed their opposition to the proposed development of the the La Costa Town Square Shopping Center to be built at the northeast corner of Rancho Santa Fe Road and La Costa Avenue. 30 Carlsbad residents spoke out against the project. The City Council did not make a final decision but will discuss it again at their next meeting on August 18th.

The proposed project will consist of a 284,000-square-foot shopping center, two office buildings totaling 55,000 square feet, and 64 single-family homes. A 128-unit multifamily housing complex would be on the northwest corner.

The most controversial piece of the project is a 98,000 sq. ft. two-story retail building. Some residents characterize this retail space as a “big box” and are afraid it would attract a store such as Walmart. Other Carlsbad residents opposed rezoning the northwest corner for high-density housing, saying it’s inappropriate to place 128 units on 10 acres next to a neighborhood of single-family homes. Carlsbad officials say that these multifamily units were added to meet state requirements for higher-density housing.

Stay tuned for more developments on this new Carlsbad project!

Vista Sheriff’s Department Meets with Neighbors about Safety

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

On Aug. 5th, the Vista Sherrif’s Department hosted a meeting at Olive Elementary School to inform neighbors about crimes taking place in the neighborhood. The Automated Regional Justice Information System which compiles crime information throughout San Diego County showed that at least 563 incidents were reported within a mile of Olive Elementary School between Jan. 1st and July 31st of this year.

The Sherrif’s Department hosted the meeting to urge neighborhood residents to fight back by joining together and looking out for each other. The Deputies asked the comunity to create a neighborhood watch team, and the residents responded very positively.

Most of the residents attending the meeting said that they had no idea about the number of crimes taking place in their neighborhood. Now that they were aware, they would band together to do something about it. The Deputies also said that lack of community knowledge is more common today than in the past when neighbors routinely shared information and gossip.

By the end of the meeting, people were starting to talk together to form a watch group. This neighborhood meeting is just one more example of why Vista is such a good area to live in People come together and care about where they live and work and will work together to create safe areas to live in.

New CEO for Encinitas Chamber of Commerce Wants to Re-Establish Integrity

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

The North County Times reports on Thurs., Aug. 6th that Marshall Weinreb has been named new CEO of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce which has its headquarters at 859 Second St. in Encinitas.

Over the past few years, the Chamber has suffered from divisiveness and a lack of accountability. Weinreb pledges to restore that accountability and integrity. The Chamber receives between $80,000 – $90,000 each year to operate its Visitor Center.

Recently, the Chamber has been in much turmoil. The former CEO left in February, citing differences with the board of directors. One of the former members of the board of directors has launched a competing group called the New Encinitas Chamber of Commerce. Weinreb calls this strategy a use of divisive tactics.

Weinreb said that his priorities include creating more networking opportunities for members and to make successes out of Chamber-sponsored events such as Oktoberfest on October 20th.

Weinreb has met with Encinitas mayor, Maggie Houlihan, and Houlihan says she welcomes his spirit of cooperation. Together, they are planning a free medical lecture series on common cancers at the Encinitas Community Library.

Weinreb is applying basic principles and management practices to the running of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce and hopes to restore faith from the community and from its members. Please visit the Encinitas Chamber on 2nd Street and learn more about living  in this community.
